Honest Opinion

Steve Wozniak said it loud and clear, just what we needed to hear

Steve Wozniak on Indian education

Just in case we are not clear with context, let me remind you. A few days ago Steve Wozniak who co-founded Apple claimed that Indians lack creativity and that all we care about is getting MBA and perhaps a BMW car and I quote he said

‘Success in India is based on studying, having a job...where’s the creativity?’

I mean who cannot relate to this when was the last time that we were encouraged to embrace our creativity and initiate a startup that is based on the original idea and not emulated. We still go to institutions that encourage you to score a higher CGPA they will put your photos on billboards if you score higher. Are they coming up with any innovative contests, that will allow us to embrace our creative side? Yeah, I don't think so either.

Just for argument's sake let's assume that prominent institutions like IIT's, IIM's are indeed encouraging innovation and creativity, but what about the students who are not fortunate enough to get in these institutions and instead due their poor economic situation find themselves in mediocre institutes where faculties show up so they get paid, I mean they aren't getting the platform to discover themselves.

Allow me to list the ventures of India that has creativity and innovation

  • OYO Rooms,

I know it isn't exactly the pioneer but they are doing something that sets them out of the crowd. That something is creativity, Ritesh Agrawal who founded it had put extraordinary efforts to make it what it is because that's what happens when instead of emulating business models, you try to re-engineer it.
  • innovative startup

  • Reliance,

over the course of years Reliance, has expanded its market and consumers because of its creativity and innovation, it takes a special kind of tact to enter these many domains and triumph over it.

  • PayTm,

hugely democratized digital economy but unfortunately VC from China saw its potential and now he has the significant stake in the company.
cashless economy
There are few more companies that I might have missed out. Apologies.

Now here are some companies that have redefined the word creativity

  • Threadless,

is an innovative company that offers clothing merchandise, I mean clothing is their core competency but now they are also into other items. What makes Threadless such an innovative company is that they have anchored creativity. They have created a community of designers from all over the globe as it takes place virtually. Designers submit their designs those designs are screened and as per the votes only a few are selected to be printed on tees, coffee mugs, back covers.
customer co-creation
  • Local Motors, also works on the principle of customer co-creation, they have formed a community where people submit there designs with respect to interiors, components and pretty much everything these ideas need to get maximum support only then they are selected, and the very people whose ideas are selected are invited to make the model.
    Rally Fighter
This model was also featured in The Fast and Furious
  • Lego, is again anchoring customer co-creation wherein people submit there ideas on ideas Lego, Idea which receives atleast 10,000 supporters gets selected and then they get materialized.
    Lego Ideas
The list will keep going on, I am not taking sides I merely reflecting birdeye view. This needs to be taken seriously until its too late. School and institutions should encourage creativity. There's more to life than a secure 9 to 5 job with the salary that will let you stay afloat.

With this whole AI and ML revolution going on, pretty soon tasks not involving creativity will be overtaken by AI's, in this time of crisis, it is very crucial to embrace our creative side.

Just so if you wanna refer to what he said, follow this link.
